To be married in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a couple must have a marriage license. To apply for a marriage license in Virginia, you and your future spouse must appear in person at the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office of your choosing. Most couples select the Clerk’s Office in the County or City in which they reside.
A marriage license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued, there are no residency requirements, and couples may be married the same day, there is no waiting period.
The marriage license fee is $30.00. You must present a valid government issued picture ID. Some Clerk’s Offices require proof of divorce if this is not your first marriage. The marriage license is only valid for marriages performed in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
While you will still have to appear at the Clerk’s Office to complete the application process and receive your license (as required by law), starting your application online will save you time. Keep in mind that filling out an online application is not available at all Clerk’s Offices, contact them directly for further instructions.
